Editorial Policy

Sources

We use official publishers only: federal statistical agencies (BEA, Census Bureau, BLS), program agencies (HUD, the Department of Labor, USDA, EIA), the IRS and federal statutes, and state revenue departments. We do not use crowdsourced price sites, aggregator “indexes” or unpublished estimates. Every dataset records its source URL, title and the date we accessed it, and every page shows the vintage of the data it uses.

Calculations

All figures — in calculators, metro, state and moving pages, and in guides — are produced by the site’s own engine from those datasets. Writers do not type numbers by hand: our editing process re-runs every figure in an article through the same code before publication. Where data is missing for a place, we say so and leave the line out rather than estimating it. Assumptions that are not data (such as default spending or mortgage-rate inputs) are labeled as example inputs that you can change.

Updates

We refresh datasets when agencies publish new releases — HUD Fair Market Rents each October, BEA price parities and Census ACS estimates annually, USDA food plans monthly, EIA prices regularly, and tax rules each tax year — and verify each release against the publisher’s current page.

Independence

MoveMath is supported by advertising. Advertisers do not see content before publication and have no influence over rankings, methods or conclusions. We don’t accept payment for placement in any list or ranking.

Corrections

If you find an error, tell us with the page and the figure. We correct verified errors promptly and note material corrections on the affected page.
